Cambodia Dental Project 2017
Date: 29th July- 12th August 2017
Venue: Cambodia World Family Dental Clinic, Phnom Penh & Sihanoukville.
Organizers: Cambodia World Family & School of Dental Sciences, USM Health Campus.

On the 29th July 2017, a group of eight dental students and a paediatric dentistry lecturer embarked on a 2-week dental mission with the Cambodia World Family. This is the fourth time such mission has been on board since the first inception of USM-CWF in 2010. In 2015, Cambodia Dental Project engaged participation of dental students from the School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Subsequently, it has been an annual ‘trip’ filled with new adventures and enthusiasm.

Cambodia Dental Project is a voluntary-based programme which entails the partnership between USM and Cambodia World Family (CWF) dental clinic. CWF is a Phnom Penh-based non-government organization that works closely with Cambodia ministries as well as other international organisations. The mission of CWF is to deliver free dental services to vulnerable children including orphans, physically-disabled and those from very poor family background. An estimate of 30-40 patients are seen on a daily basis and typical dental services provided include dental fillings, extractions, temporary dressings and preventive dentistry. The main clinic is located in Phnom Penh and a satellite clinic is in Tanop.

Apart from Malaysia, CWF also receives volunteers from other countries such as Europe, USA and Australia. Although the dental clinic is run by local Khmer staff, volunteers acclimatize with them and the surroundings very well due to their warmth and friendliness.

Our team was fortunate to be part of CWF big family. Besides helping other nations who are in need, we established network and collaboration with other organisations, shared and disseminate knowledge, acquainted to charity work but most importantly, uphold USM’s mission to empower future talents and enable the bottom billions to transform their socio-economic well-being.
