The Oral Pathology Laboratory was established in 2013. At the beginning of its establishment, this laboratory was known as the Craniofacial Science Laboratory (CSL) which was divided into two parts: namely the oral pathology diagnostic services and research. Starting in 2013, the diagnostic services section was established separately under a new quality management system and was known as the Oral Pathology Laboratory, while the research section remained under the name of the Craniofacial Science Laboratory (CSL).

The diagnostic service offered since its establishment is the Histopathological Examination (HPE) service and is part of the medical laboratory services, Universiti Sains Malaysia Specialist Hospital (USM Specialist Hospital). The Oral Pathology Laboratory has received MS ISO 15189:2014 accreditation (Medical Laboratories – Requirements for quality and competence) from the Malaysian Standards Department (DSM) since 2014. Starting 1 March 2024, the Oral Pathology Laboratory together with other USM Specialist Hospital Medical Laboratories are in the process of transitioning to MS ISO 15189:2022 (new version).
