Doctorate in Dental Public Health (DrDPH)

Programme Overview

The Doctorate in Dental Public Health (DrDPH) is a full time doctoral program. This is the specialty of dentistry that concerns the promotion of oral health, the prevention of oral diseases, and the provision and administration of oral health and dental care services in defined populations and communities. It recognises the role of behavioural and environmental factors as determinants of oral health.Epidemiological principles are applied to describe and define dental public health problems, as well as to formulate and evaluate oral health programs and policies. This approach aims to improve the oral health of communities as much as individuals through practice of evidence-based dentistry and proficient management of oral health care and resources.

The DrDPH program covers a minimum period of three (3) academic years consisting of six (6) semesters of 14 learning and teaching weeks each. The maximum duration of candidature is five (5) years. This full-time coursework program consists of ten (10) courses.

Programme Overview

The Master in Dental Sciences (MDSc) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a one-year postgraduate program clinical coursework designed to equip dental professionals with specialised expertise in Endodontology, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Periodontology. This program addresses the increasing demand for skilled dental specialists in Malaysia and internationally, preparing graduates to excel in various healthcare settings.

Programme structure: 

The MDSc program is structured over two semesters, covering both research and clinical training.

Duration of Study: Full-time: Minimum: 2 semester (1 year)
                                Maximum: 4 semester (2 years)

Admission Requirements

An applicant for admission to the 1-year Master in Dental Science program will have the following requirements:-

  1. Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent qualification;
  2. Registered with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and holds current Annual Practising Certificate (APC);
  3. Proof of registration with the dental regulatory body in another country for international candidates,
  4. A minimum of two (2) years clinical practice after basic degree;
  5. Have a good health and free from serious communicable diseases; and
  6. Candidates are required to sit for an online Those who pass the test will be called for an interview. 

USM has a right to withdraw the offer letter if you are not medically fit.

*Candidates must upload the APC (Annual Practising Certificate) document in the application system.

Language Requirements

English requirement (for international candidate only):
  • • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or 
  • • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or 
  • • A minimum score of 47 for PTE; or 
  • • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English (CAE/CPE); or A minimum score of 154 for Lingual skill Online; or 
  • • A minimum of Band 5 for MUET 
Exemption can be considered to candidate if: 
  • • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or 
  • • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)

  a) CGPA of at least 2.75 / 4.00; or
  b) CGPA of 2.50 – 2.74 / 4.00 with one of the following

  • Research experience – 1 year; or
  • Professional experience in related field – 1 year; or
  • One (1) academic publication in the field; or
  • Grade B for major / elective courses; or
  • Grade B+ for final year project.

  c) CGPA of 2.00 – 2.49 / 4.00 (Honours degree) with:

  • Research experience – 5 years; or
  • Professional experience in related field – 5 yearsAND
  • One (1) academic publication in related field; or
  • Grade B for major/elective courses; OR
  • Grade B+ for final year project
