Doctor in Endodontology

Programme Overview

The Doctor in Endodontology (DrEndo) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a three-year postgraduate clinical programme designed to produce highly skilled endodontic specialists for local and international practice. The programme combines advanced coursework, intensive clinical training, and research to equip graduates with comprehensive expertise in Endodontology. The Doctor in Endodontology programme responds to the increasing demand for qualified dental specialists in Malaysia and globally. The programme leads to specialist registration in Malaysia and provides a strong foundation for international professional recognition. Admission to the Doctor in Endodontology requires completion of a one-year Master in Dental Science (MDSc) with a foundation in Endodontology. Applicants must first enrol in the MDSc programme for the October 2026 intake, with progression into the Doctor in Endodontology programme commencing in October 2027.

Programme structure

The Doctor in Endodontology program is structured over six semesters, covering both research and clinical training. This is a taught postgraduate degree awarded upon the successful completion of a full-time programme of study encompassing research, theoretical application, and advanced clinical management in Endodontics.

Admission Requirements

An applicant for admission to the 3-years Doctor in Endodontology program will have the following requirements: -
  • 1. Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent qualification; and Master's degree in dental sciences or equivalent qualification as required by HEP.
  • 2. This degree must have a total Student Learning Time (SLT) ranging from 1600 - 2000 hours. A minimum of 800 - 1000 hours of this degree must include among others a preclinical training component which contribute towards the specialty training.
  • 3. Registered with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and holds current Annual Practising Certificate (APC); and
  • 4. A minimum of two (2) years clinical practice after basic degree, excluding the Master’s training; and
  • 5. Have a good health and free from serious communicable diseases [Health requirements set all new students into the program are required to undergo Routine Medical Examination (RME) that is conducted during the Orientation Week. In addition to the basic health examination, dental students as well as medical and nursing students, are required to undergo blood investigation for infectious diseases including Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis B surface antibody, Hepatitis C, and HIV. Students who are found with any of the tested blood-borne viruses are counselled and given options accordingly including change of programme is necessary. In addition, students whose Hepatitis B surface antibody did not detected will be called for vaccination].

Programme Specific Requirements

  • 1. Candidate is required to sit for online pre-test. Those who pass the pre-test will be called for interview.
  • 2. Candidates will be called for interview by Postgraduate Committee before final selection.
  • 3. Candidates are required to meet all other requirements set from time to time by the Postgraduate Committee, School Board or USM.
* USM has a right to withdraw the offer letter if you are not medically fit.

Language Requirements

English requirement (for international candidate only):
  • • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or 
  • • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or 
  • • A minimum score of 47 for PTE; or 
  • • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English (CAE/CPE); or
  • • A minimum score of 154 for Lingual skill Online; or 
  • • A minimum of Band 3.5 for MUET 
Exemption can be considered to candidate if: 
  • • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or 
  • • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
